Harry Potter BooksSince the release of the first novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, on June 26, 1997, the books have found large popularity from the critics, as well as the general audience worldwide. They have attracted a wide range of readers and are often considered excellent beginner books for young adults. Despite the books popularity, the series has also been criticized by many because of the increasingly dark tone as the series progressed, as well as the often gruesome violence it portrays. As of July 2013, the books have sold more than 450 million copies worldwide, making them the best-selling book series in history, and have been translated into seventy-three languages including French, German, and even Swedish. The last four books set records as the fastest-selling books in history, with the final book selling about eleven million copies in the United States within twenty-four hours of its release.
